Swollen Legs: Understanding the Possible Causes
Swollen legs are a common problem and can happen for many different reasons. For some people, swelling may be related to varicose veins or poor vein circulation. For others, lymphatic conditions such as Lymphoedema or lipoedema may play a role.
Swelling can also occur alongside fluid retention, certain medications, pregnancy, reduced mobility, or other medical conditions involving the heart, kidneys or liver.
In many cases, more than one factor may be contributing at the same time. For example, vein and lymphatic conditions can sometimes overlap, particularly when swelling has been present for a long time.
Because the causes of leg swelling can vary significantly from person to person, a thorough and comprehensive assessment is important. This may include a detailed history, physical examination, and where appropriate, an ultrasound assessment — not only of the veins, but also the surrounding tissues and other potential contributing factors affecting the legs more broadly.
Our approach focuses on gaining a holistic understanding of your symptoms and concerns, helping guide appropriate management options tailored to your individual situation.
